Ukrainian feature film BUCHA was presented in New York
In January 2024, screenings of the working materials of the Ukrainian feature film BUCHA are taking place in eight cities across the United States. In the spotlight is the impactful #ArtAgainstPropaganda project, featuring the Ukrainian film BUCHA, which opposes Russian propaganda worldwide.
Film BUCHA reveals the horrific truth of events in Ukraine that unfolded at the beginning of the full-scale invasion in the cities of Bucha, Vorzel, and Hostomel (Kyiv region).
New York previews took place at the Ukrainian Institute of America (UIA) on January 22nd and at Alpine Cinema on January 23rd. The screening took place on January 22th - Day of Ukrainian Unity, was arranged by the UIA in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations, with the participation of the screenwriter and producer of the film Oleksandr Shchur along with journalist Katya Soldak of Forbes.
Special guests of honor at the screening included the Permanent Representative from Ukraine to the United Nations Sergiy Kyslytsya and Mitzi Perdue. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Kyslytsya reflected on the importance of Ukrainian Unity in this time of war:
"Today, when we gather in this important center of Ukrainian culture and history in New York, we also remember the harsh realities at home thanks to today's screening of the film "Bucha". This film is a painful depiction of the atrocities and suffering caused during the Russian invasion. It serves as a stark reminder of why our unity and resolve are more critical than ever."
The president of the Ukrainian Institute, Kathy Nalywajko, welcomed guests and said:
“We are so honored to work with Oleksandr and his team on the BUCHA movie in order to be able to screen it here. I have to say that I have seen it before, and you will be riveted. You'll be sitting on the edge of your seat, and you will probably never forget many of the scenes from this movie.”
Also in attendance were wounded Ukrainian soldiers, in the US for medical support with prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation, hosted by the charitable organization Kind Deeds, accompanied by Executive Director Anastasia MacArthur.
The sold-out event was attended by nearly 200 guests, including representatives of businesses,local agencies and the community at large, all of whom have supported Ukraine in the fight against the aggressor for two years and continue to express their support.
As part of the event, guests had the opportunity to listen in on the conversation between the film's producer and screenwriter Oleksandr Shchur and journalist Katya Soldak of Forbes and to engage in a broad ranging Q&A session that included discussion on countering Russian propaganda.
“We have two main goals. First, fight Russian propaganda around the world” – Oleksandr Shchur, producer and screenwriter of the film “Bucha”.
Movies are one of the most powerful instruments in information delivery across the world. If someone thinks that everyone in Europe and the USA knows exactly what has happened, unfortunately, they are deeply mistaken. The Russians have already filmed and released the propaganda film “Azovstal. Liberation and Witness” with their version of the events in Mariupol and Bucha. There is a chance that the world will watch the Russian film and will accept their narrative. We must convey the truth!
Our second goal is to honor the memory of those who were murdered. We met with all characters and relatives of the victims while working on the script. The first thing we asked was whether they would be willing to tell their story to us for the film and whether such a film is needed. All of them responded “Yes, we want the world to know what happened”.
After the screening and formal program, guests continued their conversation and engagement at a reception, finishing with a live auction, run by Shchur, where three special items were presented, donated by the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and by Omelyanovich – a volunteer, the founder of the "Zampotekh" Charitable Foundation, namely:
The flag is signed by Konstantin Gudauskas, the protagonist and main character in the film - proceeds will support Konstantin's charity fund "BuchaHelp."
A T-shirt autographed by Valery Zaluzhny, Сommander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Proceeds will support the needs of the Armed Forces.
A unique laser-lit light fixture called Himars. Proceeds will support needs of the military.
The US tour of the project ART AGAINST PROPAGANDA and screenings are supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
